Why hasn't Britian adopted the euro into their economy?

Although Britain is a member of the EU, Britain has not joined the Economic and Monetary Union and thus has not adopted the euro as her currency. How might Britain’s economic performance in recent years have influenced the decision not to adopt the euro?
