Where in England should I go?

I'm an American and I am planning a trip to England this summer. I would like to visit London, Liverpool, Leeds, or Brighton but I can't figure out which one (or ones) I should pick. What are places I can't p up? Also how could I get around from city to city? I plan on being there for about a week.
