Was Brahms at one time more highly revered than he is now?

Von Blow was a great supporter of Brahms and his music. Be was also a very close contemporary. He certainly held Brahms in great esteem (as he did Wagner and Richard Strauss). I also suspect that 'the three Bs' was deemed to be somewhat neater and more alliterative than 'the two Bs and the M'.
