Is racism natural and common in humans (please don't provide the typical politically correct answer)?

Most ancient societies in Asia, Europe, Africa, America, and even Africa though of whiter skin as desirable. Is there something about the human species that thinks of people of lighter skin and thiner facial features as superior. Today it seems that even black people are trying to date those who are lighter skinned or have more refined features or light colored eyes. Please be honest with your answer.
