How to increase router speed in LAN connection ?

when i connect my two comps with a CAD 5 or CAD 6 cable the transfer speed between the two comps is about 20mbps but if i connect the two comps via the LAN sockets of my router the max speed is 2.6mbps. why so? how to increase is? also what is the basic difference between a router and a bridge?
